Rules and Regulations
The following is a list of rules and regulations that skaters must follow when attending skating
sessions. The Crossfield Skating Club would like to stress that if all skaters follow the rules,
skating will be a fun and safe place for everyone.
1. The coaches have authority over all skaters attending sessions.
2. Please limit visiting with other skaters when on the ice.
3. No gum, food or candy is allowed on the ice or sitting on the boards around the ice
surface. If you must snack please do so in the dressing room or the player’s bench
away from the ice surface. Dispose of your garbage in the receptacles provided.
4. Water is the only beverage allowed at the ice surface.
5. Skaters must get up immediately if they fall unless they are unable to do so, this is to
ensure a safe environment for all skaters and coaches.
6. Skaters must use assigned dressing rooms not the lobby or bleachers.
7. Proper skating attire is to be worn. Please tie long hair into a pony of some sort. No
jeans, baseball caps or oversized t-shirts/sweatshirts.
8. If Jr. and Sr. StarSkaters are sick or going to be away, please have the courtesy to
contact your coach to let him/her know. Twenty-four hours’ notice is appreciated
wherever possible, otherwise you may be charged for the lesson missed.
9. Skaters receiving lessons, dance partnering or their solo have the right of way.
10. Skaters must respect themselves, each other, the coaches and P.A's, and parents.
11. Disruptive, disorderly behavior will not be tolerated. Skaters parent, skater & coach
or other adult will deal with any concerns in this area. Please treat others, as you
would like to be treated.
12. All skaters are expected to follow the above rules or any other rules that may come
into effect during the skating season.
13. Please ensure that before your child enters the ice, they go to the bathroom. Each
time a skater is escorted off the ice it takes away from all other skaters and also
raises a safety concern. This year any skater(s) that needs parental assistance they
will be asked to wear a safety vest so that they will be seen from the stands or lobby.
If your child is wearing the safety vest please come assist your child.
Skating Equipment, Helmets & Attire
Skaters will have more fun and advance faster if they are properly equipped. Please direct any
questions about equipment to your coach. Your coach can recommend skate shops and the
best skates for your child.
Skates- Skates should be fitted with only one pair of socks or tights (same pair that will be worn
while skating). Skates need to fit properly, provide firm ankle support and consist of good
quality leather. Molded skates should be avoided as they are inflexible in the cold and allow the
skater less control. Skates should fit snuggly around the ankle and with some room for
movement of the toes. There should be no looseness or creases in the boot. The tongue
should be well padded and wide enough to cover the front of the ankle and stay in place.
Unlace skates sufficiently before removing them so that the back of the boot will not break
down or rip. The skates should be aired out after each use.
Blades-Ideally blades will be screwed on. Riveted blades are fairly common. Check to see that
the mounting is centered. A blade should feel centered when walking. Have skate blades
sharpened when purchased. As blades can be expensive to replace, it is recommended that a
reputable sharpener be used. Re-sharpen blades after approximately 1O hours of use (this also
depends on level of skater). The bottom toe pick on figure skates should NOT be removed. This is part of the design of figure skates. It is used for performance of some skills and essential
to proper balance. Wear protective guards when walking to and from the ice surface to protect
the blades. Dry the blades and sole plate using a cloth or towel immediately after the skates
are taken off always remove the guards while storing skates between uses. Leaving guards on
the blades will promote rust!
Helmets- Skate Canada requires all registered CanSkate participants, up
to and including Stage 5, to wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice. Bicycle, multi
sport and snowboarding/skiing helmets are NOT acceptable. The use of hockey helmets is a
mandatory Skate Canada policy and must be adhered to by all Clubs operating Skate Canada
programs.
Clothing- Clothing should provide warmth, allowing for comfortable movement and some
protection against falls. Layering of sweats, sweaters, ski jackets, long underwear or tights is
recommended. Properly fitted snow pants will help keep younger children dry and warm.
Mittens or gloves are mandatory in the CanSkate program, NO hockey gloves are permitted.
Long scarves should NOT be worn, as they can be dangerous. Long hair should be tied back in a
ponytail. NO JEANS!!!

Everyone has the right to feel physically and emotionally safe while at skating. It is expected that
every Crossfield Skating Club member works to create and preserve a physically and emotionally safe

The Safety and protection of our participants is vital to the Crossfield Skating Clubs goals. To help prevent abuse or misconduct from occurring in our locker rooms and changing areas, CSC has adopted the following change room policy. This policy is designed to maintain personal privacy as well as to reduce the risk of misconduct in locker rooms and changing areas.
Locker Room / Changing Area Monitoring
If skaters are to be supervised, the Rule of 2 MUST always be enforced
A coach should never be alone or out of sight with an athlete- especially a minor (Example: locker room/changing area).

· Bronze Standard – Certified Adult and minimum of 2 minors
One of the coaches should be the same gender as the athlete.
Parents in the Locker Room / Changing Areas

If a skaters needs assistance with their uniform or gear, if the skater is or may be injured, or a skaters disability warrants assistance, then we ask that parents let the coach know beforehand so they can properly assist their skater.
Naturally, with our youngest age groups, it is necessary for parents to assist the skaters in getting ready for their lesson. As skaters get older, the coach may, in their discretion, prohibit parents from a locker room/changing area.
Inclusive Locker Room/ Changing Area
It is imperative to remember that Skate Canada registrants and members are permitted to use facilities based on their chosen gender identity.
